The
Legend of Romeo and Juliet
1995
marked the fourth centenary of the first performance of Romeo and Juliet,
which almost certainly took place in 1595, shortly after being written
by the English intellectual William Shakespeare of Stratford-on-Avon (1564-1616).
"Romeo
and Juliet", the most tragic love story in history, has made Verona famous
throughout the world and has given it the eternal image of "the city of
love".
The
origins of the tale of the star-crossed lovers go back to a Sienese legend,
on which Masuccio Salernitano based his novella, written in 1476. The story
was subsequently retold in 1524 by Luigi da Porto, who chose Verona as
the setting and named the protagonists Romeo and Juliet.
Bandello's
novella written shortly after and translated into English by Arthur Brooke,
was the source used by Shakespeare, who gave the story such emotional power
and psychological depth that to this day continues to inspire writers, poets
and artists.
